1. William1 Dobbins was born 17 Feb 1739/40 in Granville NC, and died 23 Sept 1814 in Rutherford Co NC (S:Texas Daughters Revolutionary Ancestors). He married Susannah Collins before 1762 in Granville Co NC, daughter of William Collins. She was born 27 Feb 1737/38 in Granville Co NC, and died 1 May 1832 in Rutherford Co NC.
Nathan Byars purchased 200 acres of land from James Webb on 10 April 1783, located on Main Broad River in Rutherford Co NC. In 1795, part of this land was sold by Byars to William Dobbins. Byars moved to that area now in Cherokee Co SC about 1822, and on 5 Apr 1826, received a South Carolina State grant for 394 acres of land in Spartanburg District located on the headwaters of Island, Suck and Buck creeks, part of an original grant to James Steadman. This land included that tract that is now the Cowpens National Battleground. (S:Bridges to the Past, page 135).

2. James B.2 Dobbins (William1) was born 1762 in Granville Co NC (S:TCL), and died 28 Mar 1843 in Cleveland Co NC (S:TCL). He married Nancy in March 1785 (S:TCL). She was born about 1769, and died before 1860 in Rutherford Co NC.
James B. Dobbins served in the Revolutionary War, and left the following papers in his pension claim:
State of North Carolina Rutherford County
On this day 23rd of Oct 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the Court now in session James Dobbins. Resident of the United States in the County of Rutherford and State of North Carolina. Aged seventy years who being first duly sworn in according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed the 7th June 1832. He entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein stated.
(viz) I was living in York District South Carolina at the time I was first drafted & called into service for the term of three months. This I think was about 1779. I have no record of the date of year. I was placed in Capt. Robert McAfee's company. But I served another tour under Capt. Andrew Lord. We were put in Col. Neill's Regiment. We were marching to the frontiers of Georgia and stationed at Phily(?) Fort, where we remained till our time of service ended and we returned home.
I remained but a short time at home before I volunteered myself for another three month tour under Capt William Copeland, belonging to Col. Bratton's Regiment. But we were placed under the command of Major Watson, we were march down the country to near the place Columbia in South Carolina now is situated. After reaching this place it became necessary to select out of the main army, a guard over the prisoners that were (?) back such as the Negroes, Tories,(?) prisoners, etc. I volunteered myself for this service and was placed under the authority of Capt. Thomas (?). I was continued in this kind of service till our time expired and we were discharged & returned home. We never received any written discharge that I recollect of. I have no records of the dates of any of my services being no scholar. I had it not in my power.
I hereby relinquish any claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and I declare that my name is not upon the pension roll of the Agency of any State whatsoever.

I was first drafted in Capt. McAfee's company. I next volunteered in Capt. Copeland's company.

Capt. Robert McAfee; Capt. Andrew Lord; Capt. Bookman(?); Col. Neill; Col. Bratton; Maj. Watson. I was not in any engagement during my service which in all amounted to about seven months.

I cannot state the name of any person who is in this country who can testify as to my services in the Revolution. But as to my character I will refer to the Reverend John Paggett & to William Covington.

On this 30th day of July 1845 personally appeared before me Durham Hicks, a Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid Nancy Dobbins a resident of North Carolina in the County of Cleaveland aged seventy six years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 granting pensions to widows of persons who served during the revolutionary war that she is the widow of James Dobbins who was a private in the war of the Revolution and was a pensioner under the act of Congress of the 7th June 1832 and was inscribed on the pension list of the North Carolina agency at the rate of Twenty Dollars per annum. She further declares that she was married to the said James Dobbins sometime in the year 1785 and that her husband the aforesaid James Dobbins died on the 28th day of March 1840. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January Seventeen hundred and ninety four. (viz) of the time above stated, and that she is still a widow.

She was born about 1766 in Mecklenburg Co NC (S:NCAII), and died about 1858 (S:NCAII). 7. Drury2 Dobbins (William1) was born 7 Apr 1776 in York Co SC, and died 19 May 1847 in Rutherford Co NC. He was buried in the Dobbins Family Cemetery in Rutherford Co NC (S:Tombstone) He was a Baptist minister and a shoemaker. He married Hannah Calahan Sams 27 Jul 1793 in Rutherford Co NC. She was born 1768 in Rutherford Co NC, and died 8 Jan 1848 in Rutherford Co NC.

Pastor Drury Dobbins
A man that many called the Father of the Baptist denomination in western North Carolina was called to be the church's second preacher. Drury Dobbins brought his biblical knowledge, his unflagging faith and his strong voice to Double Springs in 1846 and helped mold its early growth until his death on 19 May 1847.
Dobbins was born in Spartanburg Co SC (then known as York District) to William and Susannah Collins Dobbins on 14 Apr 1776.
His family moved to the Ellenboro area when he was a youngster. He married Hannah (Sams) Callahan in 1793 and their only child Artie Mincie Dobbins was born in 1794. It is reported that he began his ministry about the age of twenty. He was ordained on 12 Mar 1803 at State Line Baptist Church.
Immediately after being ordained, Dobbins became pastor of Sandy Run Church. He served the Lord and His people there from 1803 thru 1847. In addition to Double Springs and Sandy Run, Pastor Dobbins also served Zion and Buffalo.
Elder Dobbins was a great favorite of the people. It is said he married more couples, preached more funerals, had more namesakes, preached the Gospel for less money and had less complaints than any other man of his time.
Rutherford County historian Clarence Griffin once said, "The Baptist denomination of this area owes more to Reverend Dobbins than any other single individual for the growth and development of the Baptist religion in Cleveland and Rutherford counties. The large Baptist population in the two counties today is evidence of his good works."
Dobbins, who labored as a farmer and shoemaker, stood 5' 10" tall. He had a square, heavy build and weighed about 200 pounds. He had dark hair and dark eyes and a distinguished looking face.
For nearly fifty years he covered Cleveland and Rutherford counties, riding his bay mare as he traveled from one brush arbor camp meeting to the next. In his saddlebags he carried a Bible, a hymnal, a slab of bacon, a pone of cornbread and a blanket that he used for cover the many times that he camped out under the stars.
He helped organize Capernum, High Shoals, Zion, Zoar, and First Baptist of Shelby. He also pushed for the establishment of a separation of the Broad River Baptist Association into a North Carolina Association and a South Carolina Association. The Kings Mountain Baptist Association was formed in 1851 - just four years after his death.
Dobbins was buried in his family's cemetery on his plantation which is located one mile north of the present day Drury Dobbins Church

She was born about 1784 (S:(1) 1850 Census lists Sarah as 66 years of age.1860 Census lists Sarah as 76 years of age, (2) JDF), and died after 25 June 1860 (S:1860 Census of Rutherford Co NC).
[I am not even certain that Jonathan was a child of William and Susannah, as there is no direct proof. However, many other researchers believe he was. CED]
In the 1840 Census of Rutherford Co NC, Johnathan Dobbins is listed at between 50 and 60 years old, indicating a birth year between 1780 and 1790. In the 1850 Census of Camp Creek Township, Rutherford Co taken on 24 Sept 1850, Johnathan Dobbins is listed at 77 years old, indicating a birth year of 1773. In the 1860 Census of Camp Creek Township taken on 25 Jun 1860, Jonathan Dobbins is listed at 81 years old, indicating a birth year of 1779. In the 1870 Census of Rutherford Co, Jonathan Dobbins is listed at 90 years old, indicating a birth year of 1780.

He was buried at New Plesant Baptist Cemetery, Cherokee Co SC. He married Catherine Connel about 1820. She was born about 1805 (S:Tombstone), and died 2 Jan 1902. Another Confederate Soldier Passes At His Home Near Gaffney
Gaffney, SC. Sept 30. Another old Confederate soldier crosses over. Richard Scruggs, or Uncle Dick, as he was familiarly known, was stricken with paralysis on Friday night and died on Monday at 2 o'clock. He leaves three sons, one daughter, four brothers and several sisters to mourn his departure, his wife having died several years ago. He was born 8 Mar 1828, being at his death 82 years, 6 months and 18 days old. His birth place was on the southeast corner of the old Cowpens Battlefield. He died on the northeast corner of the same battlefield. He served three years in the Confederate war in Haulcomb's Legion. He was a son of Robert Scruggs and a nephew of Rev. Drury Scruggs. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. R. J. Tate and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at New Pleasant Church on Tuesday. The pall bearers were: James Jolly, Robert Lawson, Mr. Cook, Thomas Jolly, R. P. Scruggs, William Lawson - all old Confederate soldiers. A large crowd attended the funeral, showing the high respect in which he was held.

30. Nehemiah M.3 Dobbins (Jonathan2, William1) was born 10 Oct 1824, and died 2 Mar 1906. He married Drusilla Wall 18 Mar 1841 in Rutherford Co NC (S:Rutherford County Marriage Bonds), daughter of John Wall and Lucy Adams. She was born 1 Aug 1819, and died 12 Jun 1887.
(Though I have no concrete proof that Nehemiah H. Dobbins was a son of Jonathan Dobbins, I believe he must have been. A copy of a letter I obtained from the DAR provides some clues. It is written by J. H. Harrill and dated 10 Aug 1937. One passage states:
"I don't suppose there is any one old enough to give you the information unless it is Mr. Street Dobbins of Henrietta NC. He is a grandnephew of my Gt. Gt. Grandfather Rev. Drury Dobbins."
I know that Street Dobbins was the son of Nehemiah. Therefore, in order for Street to be a grandnephew of Drury, Nehemiah's father would have to be a brother to Drury. Drury had three (proven) brothers: James B., William, and Ezekiel. I believe that I have a complete listing of the children of James B. I know that William had a daughter named Ann, but I have found no further evidence of children by him. Ezekiel's will gives what most believe is a complete listing of his children. That leaves Jonathan. I was not even certain that Jonathan was a brother to Drury, as there is no direct proof. However, many other researchers believe he was. If so, he was probably Drury's youngest brother (born circa 1780). He would have been about 44 when Nehemiah was born. The next youngest brother (Ezekiel) would have been 49. CED)

He served in the CSA Army, in Co H, 28th regiment, NC troops. He was a private, and enlisted on 22 Aug 1861 and was discharged in Nov 1862. He was a farmer. He married Lucinda Hawkins 4 Jul 1841 in Rutherford Co NC (S:Cleveland Co, NC Marriages 1851 - 1868), daughter of Edward Hawkins and Mary Rollins. She was born 19 Oct 1821 in Rutherford Co NC (S:TCL-1900 Census says 10-1820), and died after June 1900 (S:Census; 1900 Cleveland Co NC census lists her).
[I believe Lucinda Hawkins to be the daughter of Edward and Mary Rollins Hawkins. One of their sons, Daniel, was bondsman for Lucinda's marriage to Daniel Dobbins. HRCI states that Edward and Mary were the parents of "at least" seven children. The last one listed was born 20 Oct 1820. Lucinda was born one year later on 19 Oct 1821. Mrs. Ernest Newton, author of the Edward Hawkins article in HRCI, agrees with me that Lucinda had to be another daughter of Edward and Mary. There were also other marriages between this Hawkins family and the Dobbins family. Lucinda's son, Dillard, married Minerva Hawkins and her sister, Catherine Hawkins -- both daughters of Daniel Hawkins' older brother, Charles. Lucinda's daughter, Dulcena, married William D. Hawkins, son of Daniel Hawkins' brother William. Daniel Hawkins himself married Margaret "Peggy" Dobbins, daughter of William Dobbins Jr. Edward and Mary Hawkins are both buried at the old Hawkins cemetery on their estate. At least one of the children of Daniel and Lucinda Hawkins Dobbins is also buried in this cemetery (i.e. Dillard P. Dobbins). Daniel and Lucinda are probably buried there as well. CED]

The place and date he was wounded are not reported. He returned to duty on 11 Jul 1862. He was captured by the enemy on an unspecified date and was paroled at Leesburg VA on 2 Oct 1862.
