NOTES FROM LULA EISEMON ON JOHN FRIAR HALL FAMILY

The family of John Friar Hall (1768-1850) was convinced that he was entitled to an immense inheritance if they could only find it. They worked hard assembling all of the available data, beginning about 1890. My grandmother, born Nora Estelle Hall, told tales about their efforts, and when I showed some interest, she sent me to her cousin Mrs. Lula Eisemon, a very elderly lady living in Lynchburg, who had a collection of papers containing the carefully assembled data. About 1964 or 1965, I borrowed those papers long enough to copy out all of the genealogical data contained therein and then returned them to Mrs. Eisemon. Spelling and punctuation are unchanged. I did not completely copy all of the pages, and I seem to have made a Xerox copy of only one document, xerography being quite new at the time and copies then cost me fifty cents per page. I was later told that Mrs. Eisemon had lost the originals and told someone that I had not returned them, but as I say, she was a very elderly lady and somewhat confused. My frequent reference to James Edwin Hall in my copies was made because he was my grandmother's father.

Since these may be available nowhere else, it seems appropriate to place them on the internet. I have not been able to verify anything prior to the appearance of the Halls in Amherst Co. VA, although early tithe records of Loudon Co. show James Hall and Moses Hall, apparently in the same household, as well as John Friar in a separate household.

Lynchburg, Va.

My Dear Cousin

I guess you think that I wait a long time before answering your letter, but as I did not know Cousin Willie's address I would try and find out. He is in Ronoake City Va So if you will address him a letter Ronoake City, Va. you will be apt to hear from him. I am informed that your neice Mrs. Hicks is living 6 or 7 miles from this City and that her P.O. is Burford's Station, Amherst County Va They say that Willie is doing well in Ronoake and that he is makeing money. This is a growing little town on the Norfolk & Wester R.R. between 50 & 60 miles from Lynchburg. About 10 years ago there were only 1200 or 1500 persons there. Now there are between 15000 and 20000 there now.

Your step mother Mrs. Hyman is dead. She has been dead for several months but the family never let us know anything about it. I have no papers or letters relative to Grandfathers History only the book which I speak of. I will send it to you. Will express it. I wish we could find out some thing about that estate & if there is any money for us I wish we could get it. Aunt Ann Hicks says that she can remember the time when Grand-father started to go to England after the money, but Grand mother objected to his going. She wept and hung to his neck. beg'ed him not to go. He even started and got as far as Amherst Court-house and then turned back home. If you remember in those days, it taken a Ship six or eight months to cross the Atlantic. Consequently it would take it the best portion of 2 y'rs to make the trip and Grand mother was afraid some thing would happen to him & that he would never return It is said that this money was left to him by an Uncle and a Maiden Aunt by name of Frior and that each of them left him five millions $5.000.000 a piece This money is said to have been deposited in the Bank of England over 60 yrs. ago. If this be true it is quite a large sum by this time. I will send you the book and you can form you own opinion We are all well father Aunt Ann send love. My wife joins me in much love to you and yours.

Write soon your Cousin Chas

Marginal note: Aunt Ann Hicks is in her 74th year. Pa is 72

My Dear Cousin

.... Brother James has had sickness in his family & on last Saturday he lost one of his children, a little boy, a little over a year old. The little fellow had Pneumonia -- had been sick about three weeks, and we all thought that he was getting better but during the evening he was taken worse, and on Saturday Morn. he breathed his last. James & his wife take it very hard. It is the first one they have had taken from them ....

I have not been able to get any information in referance to Grandfathers Estate I saw Ludwell Hall the other day. He says that he has often heard Grandfather speak of it. He says that Grandfather rec'd two letters in referance to the matter, informing him that the money had been left to him. Now those letters have been lost, of miss placed and we cannot find them .... Grandfather was a native of Loudon Co. and went from there to Franklin Co .... Grandfather was born in 1768 .... You asked me to try to find out some thing about Grand fathers estate in Amherst Co. All I can learn is that Wm. Barnes Bought out the interests of all the legetees or heirs and that your brother Willie claimed that you had given him the right to act for you in the matter ....

EXTRACT COPY OF LETTER DATED 17 MAR 1891 FROM CHARLES HALL, BROTHER OF JAMES E. HALL, TO REV. SAM HYMAN (page 1 of 2 pages)

Lynchburg Va
March 17th 1891

My Dear Cousin,

.... Aunt Ann Hall -- Uncle Dawson's Widow also made a very important statement. She said Soon after I was married, Mr. Hall was going to Bedford Co. to see a Mr. Reynolds on business or with the expectation of moveing (sic) to that Co. I began to cry as I did not want him to go. Father -- she had referance to Grandp. -- saw me crying and he remarked -- ah! those tears! you are just like Betsy. if it had not been for her tears I would now be a rich man. When I started to England to get it she was so distressed and cried so, that after going some distance I returned home. She also said that Grandpa recd two letters notifying him that this money had been left to him she said, the first letter was delayed on the way, and they wrote him second time, and he recd both letters at the same time. Ludwell Hall says his Grandfather told him several times that he recd two letters from England notifying him that this money had been left to him. He also said that he had heard him say that if he -- Grandpa -- did not get it, his heirs could if they would apply for it, and all they would have to do, would be, to prove that they were the heirs of John F. Hall Now Cousin, I have endevered (sic) all the way through our correspondence to state just what I was told & I have never allowed my imagination to get the best of me. I do not believe myself that the sum was as great as it was represented or reported to be $10000000 yet I believe it was quite a large am'nt. I believe it is there .... Is Mr. Brown a Lawyer. Some of the heirs think that if Mr Brown succeeds in finding out that the money is there, it would not be wright (sic) to take it from him and put it into the hands of another to collect .... The address of your brother Willie was sent to me by Tip Hyman your half brother .... Charles Hall is a soon (sic) of Uncle David Hall. There are 4 sons & 1 daughter Children of David N. Hall .... Fletcher Ludwell. He is the oldest son. John Wesley is the 2nd son. Charles Lee is the 3rd Martha Jane the daughter and Wm Walker the youngest boy Enoch Dawson Hall.

There are five living heirs of Enoch Dawson Hall Emma E. Hall the oldest who married Day. she died leaving two sons both are of age. Alice J. Hall married a man by the name of Lane. She is also dead. left three children 2 boys & one girl 2 of them are not of age, and a guardian would have to be appointed.

John Fletcher, the only son of Uncle Dawson, is living at Buena Vista Va. Zuleika married Chas. Day. Flora W. Hall married a man by name George Maberry and lives about 1 square from me. Uncle Fletcher D. Hall had only one child a daughter Mary F. Bateman Aunt Harriette Ann Hicks never had any children Charles T. Hall. Sam N. Hall. James E. Hall. Isaac S. Hall -- Isaac Samuel. He was named for you. you ought to write to him. Of course it is unnessessary (sic) for me to give you the names of your family as you know them as well as I do ....

Aunt Ann Says that Grandpa's father lived in Franklin County and that he was married the 2nd time. She says that Grandpa did not like his stepmother & left home on that account He was the oldest child by his fathers first wife, or the oldst (sic) Son and that -- and his being called Friar, after, or for his English relatives was why this money was left to him. Grandfather had land in Franklin Co. and traded it for land in Amherst County Pa was telling the other night of an accident that once happened to his Grandfather. said he had often he'rd his father speak of it. He said that his father was a very large stout man. He was at a mill on one ocasion (sic), and that he started to cross the race with a very heavy load on his shoulder, and when he had gotten about half way over, the plank began to slip with him, and he aimed to jump over but failed to do so, and as he went down one of the Grate-bars went through the calf of his leg, up through his thigh and into his side & if he had not creened (sic) to one side it would have killed him. Pa says that Grandfather told him that when he left home, he still had the grate bar and would show it and relate his narrow escape to all came to see him ....

It seem's (sic) to me that he must have had some motive in going just that distance and then to turn back. It has often occurred to me that he went there to put those papers or letter in a place of safety .... A statement of facts, extracts of evidence in the case of the heirs of John Fryer Hall of Amherst Co. Va.

John Fryar Hall was born in Loudon Co. Va. Oct 16, 1768. His father's name was James Hall. His mother was a Fryar. She died in Alexandria Va. in 1773 when her only son John F. Hall was five years old. James Hall remarried and settled in Franklin Co. Va. where his son John F. acquired real estate which he exchanged for real estate in Amherst Co. Va. in 1802. John F. Hall married his first cousin, daughter of Moses Hall, May 9, 1803. Six sons and four daughters were born to them -- all of whom are dead except one daughter and possibly one son. Only four of said children leave heirs. When John Fryar Hall departed this life Oct 15, 1850, aged 82 years, he was still on the original home place in Amherst Co. Va. His name John Fryar was after his uncle of that name in England. In consideration of this fact his uncle, and a maiden aunt, christian name unknown, each willed him five million dollars as near as we can determine, about seventy five or eighty years ago. The evidence in support of this conviction is as follows: Mrs. Ann Hicks, only living daughter, says:

"I remember the time when father started to England after this money: I was eight or ten years old, I am now, 1891, in my 74th year. Before he started, mother wept and clung to his neck and begged him not to go, saying: 'What if he got it he would never be able to get home with it, that someone would kill and rob him.' She also did not want him to be gone so long, as it would take the greater part of two years to go and return. He started, however, and went as far as Amherst C.H. and then decided to return."

II Mrs. Ann Hall, widow of Dawson Hall, second son of John F. Hall, says "Soon after I was married, my husband was going to Bedford Co. Va. to see a Mr. Reynolds on business with the expectation of moving to that Co. and I began to cry,as I did not want him to go, and father saw me crying and remarked: "Ah! those tears! You are just like Betsy; if it had not been for her tears, I would now be a rich man. I started to England to get it but she was so distressed and cried so that after going some distance I returned home. Father received two letters notifying him that the money had been left to him; the first letter was delayed and a second one was written and the two came at the same time."

III Ludwell Hall, eldest son of David Hall, who was the eldest son of John F. Hall, says "Grandfather told me several times that he had received two letters notifying him that this money had been left to him."

The facts seem to prove that the legacy exists -- can it be obtained?

Respectfully,
Samuel B. Hyman

My dear Mrs. Eisemon:

Enclosed are records and letter from Mr. Glencross. You see by the notes which he made that there was no John Fryer Hall mentioned in any will up to 1830. Mr. Flood probably did not notice the names of the legatees or else they were some where else than in Loudon [Is this Loudon or London? KWD] .... I have found where there was a Fryer family in Westmoreland County, some of whom went up to Loudon where yours were. The question has been with me whether John Fryer went from there to London? He and a sister may have gone over there about the time of the Revolution as so many Virginians did who sided with mother England ....

Most sincerely,
Augusta B. Fothergill

You might copy and return records to me for filing.
