Pugh family
P1 William D. Pugh, millwright, of Charlotte Co VA married Mary Woodall on 29 Jan 1820 in Campbell Co VA. The marriage bonds and related papers provide no statement as to his parentage. Mary Woodall, born about 1800, was a daughter of Jacob Woodhall Sr. (son of Sampson) and his wife Rebecca Covington. See Woodall genealogy website.
In the 1850 census of Charlotte Co VA, appears the family of William Pugh, 50, planter, born in Charlotte Co, his wife Mary Pugh, 48, b in Campbell Co, and children Ann Pugh, 25, Thomas Pugh, 19, Mary Pugh, 14, Samuel Pugh 11, Charles Pugh, 9, and Patrick Pugh, 4. It appears that John Overton Pugh had already moved out, and he was listed in the 1850 Campbell Co census as John O. Pugh, 22, laborer, born in Virginia, in the household of Peter Fisher, farmer.
In the 1870 census of the eastern division of Campbell Co VA, William D. Pugh, 72, farmer, appears with Mary Pugh, 65, and William W. Pugh, 20, who worked on the farm, Roda S. McCraw, 40, and Mary Pugh, 30.
In the death records of Seneca Township, Campbell Co VA, is a report of the death of William D. Pugh, who died 1 Mar 1874 from bladder disease, at the age of 77, on Thomas Elliott's estate. He was married at the time of his death. The death was reported by his son Patrick H. Pugh. Unfortunately, the space in the report for the names of his parents was left blank.
Mary Woodall Pugh was reported in the 1880 Campbell Co VA census as living, aged 74, in the home headed by her son-in-law James W. Walker, husband of Mary H. Pugh.
There are a number of reports, which could be true but for which I can find no documentary evidence, that William D. Pugh was a son of Young Pugh of Charlotte Co VA, who was a son of Thomas Pugh of Charlotte Co, who was a son of Willoughby Pugh of Richmond and Charlotte Counties, who was a son of Lewis Pugh of Wales and of Richmond Co VA, who was a son of David Pugh of Merionethshire Wales. The line running back from Young Pugh is well proven. However, I can find no original documentary evidence establishing that William D. Pugh was a son of Young Pugh. They did live in the same part of Charlotte Co VA at the same time. If anyone has any such evidence, please let me know.

P2 John Overton Pugh (from P1) was born about 1828. On 2 Jan 1855 in Campbell Co VA he married Martha J. Callaham, born about 1835, daughter of Achilles and Mary Callaham of Charlotte (possibly Campbell) Co VA.
In the 1860 Campbell Co census were listed John O. Pugh 32, laborer in a "cas" or "car"factory, Martha J. Pugh 24, and children Luther R. Pugh 4 and Flora T. Pugh 2. In the 1870 census for the eastern division of Campbell Co were listed John O. Pugh, shoemaker, 41, Martha J. Pugh 34, Luther Pugh 14, Flora T. Pugh 11, John L. Pugh 8, Frances Pugh 6, and Charles L. Pugh 3. In the 1880 census for Brookville, Campbell Co, were listed John O. Pew, millwright, 53, Martha J. Pew 45, and children Luther R. Pew 24, Flora F. Pew 21, John L. Pew 19, Francis M. Pew 16, Charles S. Pew 13, Cora Bell Pew 8, and Miriam Pew 4.

P3 Frances Marion Pugh (from P2), born ca 1864, died in 1926. She married Leonidas Garrett Sr, born 29 Apr 1856 at Fancy Grove, Bedford Co VA, son of Benjamin Greenwood Garrett and Elvira Adelaide Hall, who were married 23 Mar 1855 in Bedford Co. VA. Elvira was born 8 Jan 1830, daughter of Henry Hall and Catherine W. Tompkins, and she died 8 Apr 1857 . Leonidas Garrett, 4, appeared in the 1860 census of Campbell Co VA in the household of his grandfather Henry Hall, 64, tailor.

P4 Charles S. Pugh (from P2) was born 1867 and was living in 1957 in Asheville NC. He was a cigar maker. He was married at least two times. His first wife has not yet been unidentified. His second wife was Lonzenna Stephens, daughter of George W. and Catherine Stephens. Lonzenna seems to have been born about May 1881, and they were married about 1900, probably in Asheville NC. Charles S. and Lonzenna Pugh and family appear in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses for Asheville NC. In 1910, Charles' sister Marion (Miriam?) Pugh, 32, a dry goods sales lady, appears in the same household.

P6 Leonidas "Lonnie" Garret Jr (from P3), was possibly born 13 Dec 1893 and died in Nov 1977 in Lafayette LA. He appears in the 1920 census of the Ft. Lewis precinct of Bath Co VA with wife and four children. He was married to Lillie B. ---, born ca 1896..
