Daniel Dobyns of Colonial Virginia: His English Ancestors and American Descendants

This book, when originally published in 1969, was an edition of 300 copies. You are not likely to find an original at this late date. I gave one of the last copies I had to the Books on Demand division of University Microfilms International in Ann Arbor MI. They said that they would make copies available on demand, and they did so until recently. They have now announced that they are out of the business of publishing books on demand. See

http://www.proquest.com/products_umi/bod/bod.shtml ,

which reads

"Thank you for visiting the Books on Demand website. Due to a recent product realignment, UMI is no longer offering this program. Thank you."

The html material on the myoutbox.net web site is much more up-to-date than the material in the 1969 book. However, if you want a copy of the book as originally published, you may be able to make it or to have it made by your local copy shop. All of the pages are presented here in TIFF format for that purpose. It will be necessary to print them front and back on 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of white paper. The original book had the title page also reproduced on the front cover. The covers are both white card stock, and are stapled onto the text. The spine of the book is then covered with black tape.

If you do not require absolute authenticity, it might be better to use a more modern binding sysem, and bind the text and cover with a plastic comb binder or a spiral binder.

To read and print the TIFF files, it is necessary to have a program that will read multipage TIFF files in compression level Group 4. Many programs will show you only the first page of a multipage TIFF file, leaving you to wonder about the rest. The files offered here were created using Visioneer PaperPort software, which will read and print them, as well as modify them, but which is not free.

Alternatiff software, which is available free and downloadable from

http://www.alternatiff.com

will work to read and print TIFF files directly from the internet if you are using a Windows operating system. I have used this software with both Window 98 and Windows XP, and it works. It is one of the programs recommended by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for reading their on-line patent files.

Accel ViewTIFF is said to work in some Mac and Windows systems. I have never used it. I have never used a Mac computer. The program is available from

http://www.acordex.com/browseProd/VTplugin.html

Another program is NIH Image which is said to work on Mac computers. A run-anywhere version and a Windows version are also offered. I have never used this program.. It is available from

http://rsb.info.nih.gov/nih-image/about.html

There is a suggestion at

http://www.waterrights.utah.gov/techinfo/viewers.htm

that QuickTime software may insist that it be chosen to read TIFF files, and the it may be unable to view multipage compressed TIFF files. The cited website gives help on how to overcome this.

It may be easier to save the TIFF files to your hard drive, then open the viewer that you want to use, and use that viewer to open the files from your hard drive.

On at least one Windows XP computer, Microsoft Office Documents Viewer opens these documents perfectly from the hard drive.
