WILLIAM3 DOBYNS (CHARLES2, DANIELI AND HIS DESCENDANTS
¶220 WILLIAM3 DOBYNS (CHARLES2, DANIELI) (from ¶27) was born on 5 Mar 1724/5 in Richmond Co. Va. (fn 312) He married (1st) about 1746 REBECCA MISKELL, born 20 Jan [original text said June. KWD 1987] 1724/5, (fn 313) daughter of HENRY MISKELL and his wife WINIFRED. WINIFRED MISKELL was the daughter of MARY NEWMAN by either her first husband WILLIAM BROCKENBOUGH or her second husband JOHN DALTON, and it seems more likely that she was the daughter of WILLIAM BROCKENBROUGH. (fn 314) The will of MARY DALTON, written 18 Sept 1754 in Richmond Co. mentions HENRY MISKELL, who was her son-in-law. (fn 315)
The will of HENRY MISKELL, drawn 1 Oct 1760, proved 2 Feb 1761, names his sons WILLIAM, NEWMAN, DANIEL, DAVID and JEREMIAH. A plantation and other lands were left to "son-in-law WILLIAM DOBYNS and wife REBECCA" and bequests were made to WILLIAM BAKER and granddaughter WINIFRED BAKER. (fn 316) The births of sixteen, possibly seventeen, children of HENRY MISKELL and his wife WINIFRED are recorded in the register of North Farnham Parish (NFPR), Richmond Co. Va.
WILLIAM3 DOBYNS married (2nd) by Richmond Co. marriage bond dated 11 Dec 1790 SUSANNAH DAVIS. (fn 317)
The will of WILLIAM3 DOBYNS of North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co. Va., drawn 8 Feb 1804, proved 5 May 1817, makes bequests to wife SUSANNAH, to son LEROY, to grandson ABNER DOBYNS, to grandson JESSE DOBYNS, to "daughter-in-law SARAH DOBYNS" certain land "during her widowhood, then it goes to grandson THOMAS DOBYNS," to granddaughter JOANNA JACKSON, to grandson JOSHUA STONE, to grandson JOSa STONE, to son-in-law LUKE JACKSON, "to grandson JESSE DOBYNS all the land I got by his grandmother," to grandson HENRY M. DOBYNS. The remainder of the estate was to be divided into three parts, one to wife, one to son LEROY DOBYNS, the other third to two grandsons LEROY DOBYNS and CHICHESTER DOBYNS to be equally divided between them. The will mentions land purchased from EDWARD DOBYNS. Witnesses were JOHN SMITH and DANIEL DOBYNS Sr. (fn 318)

¶222 ABNER5 DOBYNS (HENRY4, WILLIAM3, CHARLES2, DANIELI) (from ¶221) was born on 19 Sept 1771 in Richmond Co. Va., son of HENRY and SARAH DOBYNS. (NFPR) As will become clear below, it seems likely that HENRY4 DOBYNS was the father of the particular ABNER DOBYNS whose descendants are traced herein, but it is possible that ABNER was the son of one of the brothers of HENRY4 DOBYNS, who were CHARLES, WILLIAM, THOMAS and possibly LEROY DOBYNS. ABNER DOBYNS was mentioned in the will of WILLIAM3 DOBYNS only as a grandson, without mention of his father.
A Richmond Co. Va. marriage bond was issued on 14 Nov 1798 for the marriage of ABNER DOBYNS, Jr. and WINIFRED NORTHEN, (fn 325) daughter of GEORGE NORTHEN and MARGARET JONES his wife. The "Jr." appended to the name did not necessarily, in that era, indicate that his father was named ABNER. It merely indicated that he had an older living relative named ABNER DOBYNS, probably the ABNER DOBYNS who was the brother of his grandfather WILLIAM DOBYNS. The will of MARGARET NORTHEN, drawn 10 Apr 1799, names her children EDWARD J. NORTHEN, WINIFRED DOBYNS, EDMUND NORTHEN, BARBARA B. NORTHEN and SAMUEL NORTHEN. (fn 326)
There is a family Bible (fn 327) containing a family entry section as follows:

The entry "(s of H)" after the name of ABNER DOBYNS apparently means "son of HENRY", reinforcing the conclusion above. There are some inconsistencies between this Bible record and information known from other sources, particularly the middle name and death date of GEORGE H. DOBYNS.
ABNER5 DOBYNS died before 2 Dec 1822, when the Richmond Co. Court ordered the division of his estate. The accounts of this division, (fn 328) as finally reported to the court on 7 July 1823, list nine children of ABNER5 DOBYNS as being GEORGE H. DOBYNS, PARTHENIA DOBYNS, PEGGY (also called MARGARET) DOBYNS, AMANDA F. DOBYNS, ARMENIOUS DOBYNS, BRUNETTA W. DOBYNS, LEROY W. DOBYNS, ARRETTA L. DOBYNS and POLLY M. DOBYNS, the eight last [Begin original page 74] named being minors. The minors were represented by a guardian, THOMAS DOBYNS, who has not been identified with certainty. The widow of ABNER5 DOBYNS, WINIFRED, had in the meantime married WILLIAM NEASOME, who was also mentioned in the estate settlement as the then husband of the widow. (fn 329)
The will of WILLIAM NEASOME, drawn 11 Sept 1823, proved 2 May 1826, (fn 330) shows him to have been a widower with two children, CATHERINE and SAMUEL, when he married WINIFRED NORTHEN DOBYNS. The will left to wife WINIFRED all houses and lands which at her death were to be divided among his children; "to the wife all articles I bought at the sale of ABNER DOBYNS"; witnessed by EDWARD J. NORTHEN, Jr. The "widow WINIFRED and her son-in-law SAMUEL W. NEASON" refused to qualify as executors.
The next relevant reference is a power of attorney (fn 331) executed 5 Aug 1833 from some of the family members who had moved to Spencer Co. Ky. WINNIFRED NEWSOM, mother of ARETTA DOBYNS deceased; JOSEPH B. KELSICK who married PARTHENIA DOBYNS; THOMAS JASPER who married MARGARET N. DOBYNS; ELIJAH SWOPE who married BRUNETTA W. DOBYNS; and JAMES SWOPE who married MARY M. DOBYNS; PARTHENIA, MARGARET, BRUNETTA and MARY being sisters of ARETTA and children of ABNER DOBYNS deceased, appointed their "friend" GEORGE H. DOBYNS of Essex Co. Va. to receive of THOMAS DOBYNS of Richmond Co. Va., guardian of ARETTA all money of ARETTA now in the hands of THOMAS.

(fn 333) According to information given at his death by his son THOMAS A. DOBYNS, he was the son of ABNER DOBYNS. It is uncertain whether the middle name of GEORGE H. DOBYNS was HENRY or HAMILTON; he seems to have used both names. He married in 1830 to JUDITH ELIZABETH ROANE HOSKINS, born 1810, died 1863, daughter of Capt. THOMAS HOSKINS and his wife ANN BUCKNER. They are buried at "Mt. Clement", Essex Co. Va.
In the 1850 Census of Tappahannock, Essex Co. Va., the following household is listed:

A bond was signed (fn 334) by JUDITH E. DOBYNS, THOMAS A. DOBYNS, R.L.H. DOBYNS and W.D. WRIGHT for JUDITH E. DOBYNS to serve as administratrix of the estate of GEORGE H. DOBYNS. The inventory and appraisal of this estate (fn 335) dated 1859 refers to T.A. DOBYNS, ANN HOSKINS, JAMES ROY MICOU, MINTERS G.H. DOBYNS, W.A. WRIGHT, and L.W. DOBYNS, and mentions THOMAS A. DOBYNS, surviving partner of GEORGE H. DOBYNS and SON.
In his obituary (fn 336) it was stated that GEORGE H. DOBYNS died at Tappahannock, Essex Co. Va., his place of residence, on 27 Sept 1857, of paralysis, in the 58th year of his age. He came to Tappahannock 30 odd years before his death -- friendless and unknown. He died respected by everyone who knew him. He was a federal officer for years and Justice of the Peace at the time of his death.

They moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1848 and then to Linn Co. Kansas in 1858. HENRY M. DOBYNS was a Captain in the Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War and was killed on 23 Oct 1864 his widow JEMIMA DOBYNS applied for and received a widow's pension. (fn 361)

Additional proof of this marriage is found in Richmond Co. records. An agreement between LAWSON and others states that CHRISTOPHER LAWSON drew his will on 17 May 1772 naming children, at that time unmarried, EPPAPHRODITUS, JOANNA, CATY and LUCY LAWSON. As the wife of CHRISTOPHER LAWSON never remarried and died on 14 Nov 1786, the estate was then divided between EPPAPHRODITUS LAWSON, JOANNA LAWSON, CATY who married ROBERT NEWSOM, and LEROY DOBYNS who married LUCY LAWSON. The agreement was proved 2 July 1787. (fn 371)
LEROY4 DOBYNS drew his will in Richmond Co. Va. on 29 Oct 1820, proved 6 Aug 1821, bequeathing to son WILLIAM DOBYNS his boat, to grandson JOHN LAWSON DOBYNS a horse, and a daughter and other grandchildren were mentioned but not named. His friend, WARNER TAPSCOTT was appointed executor. (fn 372) By Richmond Co. marriage bond dated 27 Dec 1817, WARNER TAPSCOTT of Lancaster Co. Va. had married ELIZABETH S.
