Descendants of Pleasants Murphy, son of John Murphy Sr

N01-1 Pleasants (sometimes Pleasant) Murphy was a son of John Murphy Sr and Katy Bates. This annotation is connected to main genealogy. Information about him is provided in William and Mary Quarterly Vol 3 Series 2 (1923) pages 231-238, in an article entitled "Pleasants Murphy's 'Journal and Day Book'". He was born on 14 June 1786 in Bedford Co VA and died in 1863 in Tazewell Co VA. On 1 Dec 1818 he married Ann Robertson Shelton of Pittsylvania Co VA, who was born about 1803 (according to 1850 census) and died about 1861. Her parents were William Shelton (1757-1825) and Elizabeth Cheney Johnston (d 1820) or possibly Hannah Yates (b 1734). Pleasants and Ann moved to Tazewell Co where they lived the rest of their lives. He was in the 1840 and 1850 census of Tazewell Co. He was a farmer and a school teacher. He served on active duty in the militia from Bedford Co in the War of 1812. In the 1850 census, Pleasants Murphy was listed as 56 and Ann R. Murphy was listed as 47. Children listed in the 1850 census were Betsy Murphy 30, Ewel S. Murphy 25, Samuel H. Murphy 18 and Virginia L. Murphy 15.

N01-2 Virginia Letitia Murphy (from N01-1) was born about 1834 and died 20 Aug 1872 in Kingsport TN. In 1854 or 1856 she married Peter Ephraim Hedrick, born 16 Oct 1830, died 20 May 1872 in Kingston TN, son of John Hedrick (1785-1870) and Elizabeth Hoppess (d 1858). Information is from Bible of John Hedrick (1785-1870) mentioned in records in LDS Library. In the 1860 census of Tazewell Co VA, they were living very close to Pleasants Murphy. See also here.

N01-5 Nina Lea McCargar (from N01-4) was born 30 Aug 1888 and died 30 Aug 1912. She married Robert Benjamin Mathewson on 7 Feb 1910. He was born 11 Apr 1880 and died 9 Aug 1912. Both died in Nebraska.
