THE MURPHY FAMILY OF BEDFORD COUNTY VIRGINIA

The origin of the Murphy family of Bedford County is uncertain. It is possible that they came out of Lunenburg County Virginia. There is a deed recorded in Lunenburg County Deed Book 8, pages 154-5, dated 29 February 1764, by which John Murphy, Jr. of Lunenburg Co., deeded to John Murphy Sr. of the same county, for fifty pounds, two hundred acres of land in Lunenburg Co. on one side of Butchers Creek, adjoining Famous Branch and Church Spring Branch. Transfer was by livery of seizen 9 Feb 1764. The deed was acknowledged 14 June 1764.
There is a land grant record among the records at the Virginia Archives by which John Murphy was granted on 14 July 1769, 320 acres on the head branches of Back Creek and Pretty Creek in Bedford County. Recorded at Patents 38, 1768-70, page 667. Other such grants to John Murphy in Bedford County are recorded with a later date
FIRST GENERATION
1 JOHN1 MURPHY The earliest ancestor that we can identify with reasonable certainty in the Murphy family is John Murphy, Sr., probably born prior to 1750, died 1819. Possibly he was John Murphy, Jr., of Lunenburg County. By Bedford County Virginia marriage bond dated 25 April 1770, he married Katy Bates. This bond specified that John Murphy and William Bates gave bond for the marriage between John Murphy, bachelor, and Katy Bates, spinster. William Bates may have been the father of Katy Bates, but that is not clear from the marriage bond. annotation
The first appearance of John Murphy in the records of Bedford County was on 28 Nov 1764, when he joined others to give bond that William Mead would perform the duties of sheriff of the county. annotation -- additional information on John Murphy See Bedford County Deed Book 2 pages 720-1.
John Murphy was given leave by the Bedford County Court to build a mill on Richardson's Mill Creek on 26 Feb 1772. See Bedford Co. Order Book 4 page 8.
John Murphy made several public service claims for supplies furnished to the Revolutionary Army, such as bacon, beef, corn, etc. They are recorded in the Bedford County Order Books for 1774-1782 and 1782-1783.
According to the records of the South River Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers) as recorded in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol VI, page 335, on 17 Feb 1781 and later in July 1781, John Murphy (probably Sr.) requested to come under the care of Friends (in other words, to join the Quakers), but on 20 April 1782, his request for membership was refused.
The will of John Murphy, Sr. (Bedford Co. Will Book 5 pp 114-7) was signed 24 July 1819 and proved 25 October 1819. In this will, John Murphy left his wife, during her life, his cleared land on Mill Creek. He named his sons Pleasants, John, Bennett, William, Lewis, James, Samuel and Uel, his daughters Betsy Headin, and Polly. He also mentioned John's two eldest sons John and William and money to purchase land for them in Indiana or Illinois. He also mentioned land to be bought in Indiana for his son Samuel's children. He stated that whatever shall remain "I Give it all to be equally divided amongst all my children (Blacks excepted)".

3 JOHN2 MURPHY, Jr. (JOHN1), was the son of John Murphy, Sr. and probably his wife Katy Bates. John Murphy, Jr. married, by Bedford Co. Va. bond dated 30 Dec 1799, Theodotia Turner, daughter of Elijah Turner (who died 1820).
Perhaps it was this John Murphy who qualified as Ensign in the 10th Regiment of Virginia on 27 April 1795. See Bedford Co. Order Book 10, page 365.

13 ELIJAH TURNER3 MURPHY (JOHN2, JOHN1), was a son of John2 Murphy, Jr. and his wife Theodotia Turner. Elijah Turner Murphy was born about June 1806 (1850 Census and Bedford Co. Death Register page 148) and died 27 Dec 1889. He married Emilia Bates, daughter of William Bates, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Gibbs. She was born about 1820 (1850 Census). They married on 20 Dec 1841 in Bedford Co. VA. Sureties on the marriage bond were Elijah Murphy and William Bates, Jr. There is a letter of permission from the bride's father. The will of Elijah T. Murphy, dated 4 April 1889, proved 24 March 1890, is recorded in Bedford County Will Book 26 page 599. At the time he wrote his will, his wife was still living. Elizabeth Gibbs is said to have spoken of a Grandmother Meade. Their children included

In Bedford County Virginia Will Book 1 pages 267-8 is the will of John Bates of Russell parish, Bedford County, which mentions his wife Mary Bates and his minor son William Bates, makes his friend John Murphy an executor, and was witnessed, among others, by the mark of Catherine Murphy. The will was dated 25 Nov 1777 and proved 22 Dec 1777. This could be John1 Murphy and his wife Katy Bates Murphy, and the minor William Bates could be William Bates, Sr., father of Emilia Bates.

15 WILLIAM LEMUEL4 MURPHY (ELIJAH TURNER3, JOHN2, JOHN1), was born on 16 Dec 1845 and died 29 May 1909. He was the son of Elijah Turner3 Murphy and his wife Emilia Bates, married Lucinda Jane Leftwich, born 27 May 1849, died 19 Aug 1930, daughter of Joel Leftwich and his wife Sarah (Sally) Ware Johnson. They were married on 23 Dec 1869. He was a farmer and a shoemaker. The ancestry of Lucinda Jane Leftwich is traced in the Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia. William Lemuel Murphy enlisted in 1863 in Co. G., 28th Reg, Hunton's Brigade, The Patty Layne Rifles, CSA. He served 1 1/2 years. This was a Bedford Co. unit, organized April 1861.
When William Lemuel Murphy was a teenager, he lost an eye as a result of a practical joke. His older brother (which one is not recorded, and indeed the record does not show that he had an older brother) had recently married and was living with his bride at an isolated house. Young William went one night and made noises outside the house as if he were a burglar to scare his brother. He succeeded. His brother came out and shot at the shadowy figure and hit young William in the eye. Because of the effect on his appearance, in later life he would not allow his picture to be taken. There was apparently one tintype made, but it was subsequently lost.
